Everyone’s Emotionally Exhausted After Getting Personally Victimized by the Oscars

The 2017 Oscars just made a giant error by announcing La La Land as Best Picture. In fact, the real winner is Moonlight, and everyone is freaking out.

Former Bonnie and Clyde castmates, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, took the stage to announce the Best Picture at tonight’s Academy Awards. The minute Beatty opened the envelope, it was clear something was wrong. He pulled out the piece of paper, looked confused, then looked inside the envelope again to see if he missed something.

Dunaway, tugging his arm, said to Beatty, “You’re impossible,” when he failed to announce the winner in a timely manner. He showed her the paper and she announced the winner as La La Land. The filmmakers took to the stage and began giving speeches.

At 9:10 p.m. PST, many Twitter followers were filled with disappointment:

But moments later, a man with a headset walked onto the Oscars stage at the Kodak Theater, and every La La Land actor and producer’s face turned white. Finally, one of the producers said to the audience, “There’s been a mistake. Moonlight won best picture.”

Watch the strangeness below.

Then the mood pendulum began to swing in the other direction on Twitter.

Also at 9:21 p.m., we caught this tweet that captured the emotional roller coaster of the night:
At 9:41 p.m., this tweet was posted, showing the mood had turned from chaos to boy band-infused joy:
The next morning, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm responsible for tallying Oscar votes, issued an apology for the mix-up and explained a little bit about why the situation happened.
“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture,” a rep for the firm said Monday morning. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
Apparently, Beatty was given the envelope for the Best Actress category, which was why he hesitated and showed it to Dunaway, who blurted out that the winner was La La Land.
This is certainly the strangest ending to the Oscars since 1974, when a streaker bared all:
Crazy.
