How J.K. Rowling, Adele & 30 Other Celebs Are Celebrating International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day, everybody! How are you celebrating this momentous, glorious, empowering day?

There are some out there, namely celebrities, who are making their voices and feelings heard on International Women’s Day. There’s one celebrity — ahem, I meant to say president — who found time in his busy day to wish women everywhere well on International Women’s Day. This feels ironic for a number of reasons, mainly because of previous allegations about his treatment of women. For your consideration:

And back to our regularly scheduled International Women’s Day programming.

Some female celebs are penning essays about what this day means to them.

Zosia Mamet wrote about her toxic ex-boyfriend for Refinery29. When highlighting how her ex prioritized himself and his career to the point that it became misogynistic and harmful, Mamet wrote: “So, let’s break this down into its simplest form. When he put everything he had into his career and left nothing for me or our relationship, he was just doing his job and I should understand. But when I so much as mentioned a career opportunity, I was a heartless heartbreaking bitch.” Mamet’s point? That women should never have to find themselves choosing between a career and a relationship, nor should they feel their work or worth is so devalued by their partner that it cuts them to the core. Rock on.

Game of Thrones star (and casual tamer of dragons) Emilia Clarke wrote an amazing essay for Huffington Post on the new sexy: being kind to one another and using your voice for good. Clarke expounds on her belief that kindness is key: “I believe we all have the opportunity to stand up as women in our ordinary everyday lives. I believe that we all have the power to replace hate with justice, open-heartedness and kindness. This doesn’t have to be a seismic change that we all have to learn. I believe we, as humans, (gender aside for a moment) have the opportunity to combat hate because of the way we behave towards one another. Not just during seminal moments, but during our everyday, ordinary ones too. I believe we can start with kindness.”
