Princess Diana and Her Former Lover Were Surprisingly Domestic

Princess Diana‘s former lover — and Prince Harry‘s longtime rumored father — is about as reclusive as a person can get. James Hewitt stays far out of the spotlight, living in the countryside of Devon with his widowed mother. But in a new interview with the Australian TV show Sunday Night, he opened up about some of the details about his long affair with Di that began after he became her horseback-riding instructor in 1986.

It’s a gradual period and then, you know, suddenly you can’t get enough of each other or see each other as much as you want,” he told the show about how his relationship with Diana turned from professional to romantic. The pair began their affair as Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles was falling apart.

As they continued their five-year tryst, Hewitt and Diana would secretly escape to the farm in Devon where Hewitt now lives, where they settled into a surprisingly domestic routine.

“I’d cook, and [Diana] would wash up. Just dinner and relaxing and laughing,” Hewitt explained.

On the show, Hewitt also briefly addressed the longstanding rumors that he’s Prince Harry’s real father, something he’s always denied.

“No, I’m not,” he said firmly on the show, adding that the rumors likely make things “worse for [Harry], probably, poor chap.”

Hewitt, who has never married or had children, speculated that the rumor about him and Harry won’t die because “it sells papers.” He’s likely telling the truth, though — Diana’s former butler has said before that she and Hewitt didn’t even meet until Harry was a toddler.
