Samantha Bee has a lot to say about the Trump administration, but every once in awhile, her show departs from its usual focus. Tonight, Bee offered a vision of hope in the midst of apparent political despair for both parties.

If you’ve regularly watched Full Frontal with Samantha Bee from the beginning, you probably remember the clip about rape kits. If not, we’ll bring you up to date. In a very depressing bit last year, Bee highlighted how rape kits have been collecting dust for decades — and how many have even been destroyed. At the time, it seemed like there was little hope for justice, but hope is exactly what we received tonight with a very unexpected update from Georgia.
Turns out, somebody actually cares about the plight of the tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of untested (and often thrown away) rape kits. Scott Holcomb and the George House of Representatives showed unanimous support for a bill mandating that the thousands of kits sitting around be properly tested and turned over to authorities within 96 hours. Unfortunately, when the bill arrived at the Senate, “all hell broke loose,” thanks largely to Renee Unterman.

Things did not look good, but then Speaker of the House David Ralston (a Republican) approached Holcomb (a Democrat) and asked for his advice. At the time, Ralston didn’t view Holcomb merely as a member of the opposing party, but rather, as a politician with a great idea.
It took a little political maneuvering, but Ralston and Holcomb were able to get the bill passed in the nick of time. Holcomb referred to the crazy process as “School of Rock on steroids.”
Their hard work ultimately paid off, and now, thousands of rape kits are finally going to be analyzed, as they should have been long ago.

In these trying times, the occasional success story is much appreciated, especially when it’s told in animated form on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. It’s so nice to see politicians working together and accomplishing something! Perhaps their story can serve as inspiration for other states.
