Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser Is Living Her Truth, and It Includes Coming Out on Twitter

I don’t know about you, but when I was 19 years old, I was nowhere near what you would call brave, honest or open about myself. From now on, though, I’m going to start taking my bravery and honesty cues from Stranger ThingsShannon Purser, who came out as bisexual on Twitter late Tuesday evening.

Purser had only recently posted on Twitter about her personal relationship with sexuality and anxiety. Discussing in a short thread how she is working through her own issues in terms of living her truth while weighing the anxiety that comes with it, it wasn’t hard to be sympathetic to Purser’s state of mind at the time. But it was her level of honesty about a personal but relatable situation that made her even more endearing to us.

Cut to a week later, and Purser is opening up even more on that very public forum called Twitter to both issue a formal apology about a misstep that she made and further disclose her sexual identity to us all. If you weren’t a fan of hers before this, you can bet your boots you will be afterward.

In a lengthy note posted to her Twitter, Purser began her coming-out story by apologizing for a recent and now-deleted tweet responding to Riverdale fans who wanted to see Betty and Veronica go from just friends to girlfriends. Purser apologized for her actions, which could have been perceived as “queerbaiting,” and then connected her own alienation to the term with the fact that she is very new to the LGBTQ community.

“I don’t normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I’ve only recently come out as bisexual to my friends and family,” Purser began. She went on to say that “I have never heard the term ‘queerbaiting’ in my life until today. That being said, I have never wanted to alienate anyone and my tweet was thoughtless.”

Purser finished her amazing personal statement by opening up about her values. Again, I wish I were as brave, honest and open about this as she was in this note. “Either way, it wasn’t a wise or kind thing to say and I’m disappointed in myself, especially as a Christian who has been taught to speak love to others.”

The note is not only a thoughtful apology note about a sensitive subject, but a really beautiful disclosure about a very personal matter. Congrats to Purser, who is living her truth and hopefully feeling very happy about doing so.
