“Will Ferrell? Why Will Ferrell?” That’s what you probably asked yourself when you found out Ferrell gave a commencement speech at a major university.
Ferrell may play dopes in his movies, but in real life, you’d better believe that he has some serious life know-how.

Ferrell gave USC’s graduation commencement speech this weekend, and well, he crushed it. Not only was he hilarious, as one would expect him to be, he also had some great words of wisdom for the modern-day young adult.
As one of the millions of family members who attended the graduation ceremonies of a loved one this weekend (oh, yes, I went to two) I can confidently tell you: Graduations are freaking boring, which is why I am so immensely jealous USC had the right idea and brought in Ferrell to spice things up.

“To me, my definition of success is my 16-1/2-year marriage to my beautiful and talented wife, Viveca. Success are my three amazing sons, Magnus, 13, Mattias, 10, and Axel, age 7,” Ferrell said in one of the most poignant moments of his speech.
He added, “No matter how cliché it may sound, you will never truly be successful until you learn to get beyond yourself. Empathy and kindness are the true signs of emotional intelligence.”

The entire speech is 25 minutes, and just like you asked yourself, “Why Will Ferrell?” you’re probably asking yourself, “Why the heck should I spend 25 minutes watching this speech?” To that I would respond, “Because you’ll regret it if you don’t.” Oh, and for that airline joke. (You’ll know what I mean when you get there.) Go in for the laughs. Stay for the wisdom.
