On one of the most loving holidays on the American calendar, Mother’s Day offers the biggest opportunity for people to show their tributes and kind words to mothers and maternal figures in their lives. Naturally, we expected to see plenty of celebrities doling out healthy portions of kind words and photos on social media as part of celebrating Mother’s Day. In my opinion, it was Billie Lourd’s Mother’s Day tribute to Carrie Fisher that was perhaps the most perfect.

One can only imagine how difficult the last few months have been for Lourd. After losing her mother, Fisher, and grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, mere hours apart from one another in December 2016, Lourd’s been pushing forward. On Lourd’s Instagram, we’ve gotten to peek into her life in this new phase of it on her terms. She’ll frequently post sweet photos with her boyfriend, actor Taylor Lautner, photos of herself goofing around and sometimes we get to see throwback photos of Lourd with Fisher.
This is precisely what Lourd did to celebrate Fisher as a mother on Sunday for Mother’s Day. Simply captioning her photo tribute with a heart emoji, she posted a photo of her sitting on Fisher’s lap on what appears to be a train. Lourd is mugging for the camera as Fisher embraces her. It looks like the photo is from the early ’90s.

It was simple, sweet and to the point — a move one might expect to come from Fisher’s progeny on a day so loaded with love and emotion for mothers and children everywhere and of all kinds. It’s not only touching to get this intimate look into Lourd’s relationship with her mother, but there’s something so great about the fact that she let’s the photo really speak for itself. It looks as though their bond is loving and real and nothing could ever change that.
