Miley Cyrus’ Emotional Comeback Brought All the Feels to the BBMAs

Apologies if you adore Bangerz-era Miley Cyrus, because she is officially gone. Cyrus is in the midst of a career makeover, and she’s eager to show off a side we haven’t seen since “The Climb.” What better platform for a comeback than the Billboard Music Awards?

Making her television debut of the new song “Malibu,” Cyrus was low-key this evening in a Western hat, off-the-shoulder top and white denim Daisy Dukes. Her outfit was surprisingly sedate, but that wasn’t the most notable aspect of her performance. Rather, Cyrus’ gentle country sound and the emotion accompanying it made us sit up and take notice.

Cyrus was clearly thrilled to be back on stage, but while she would have shown that with wild, controversial displays in the past, she demonstrated her excitement in other ways tonight: with smiles when she was offstage and a few tears during her performance.

The tears emerged at the very end of the song, as the audience cheered wildly. Overcome with emotion, Cyrus was clearly touched by how much the crowd loved her new song. It wasn’t an overt or showy display of emotion, though; just a few tears came to her eyes. This made the moment seem far more genuine than it would have if Cyrus had been a crying mess.

One person was not impressed, but we can’t say we’re surprised.

Perez Hilton can snark all he wants, but we’re loving the new and improved Miley Cyrus. That’s not to say there was anything wrong with Bangerz Miley, but it takes courage to admit that a previous path wasn’t working and to return to your roots, no matter how much you scoffed at them previously. Kudos to Cyrus for being true to herself.
