John Oliver Dumbs Down Trump Fiasco With ‘Stupid Watergate’ Explanation

It can be difficult to keep track of the seemingly never-ending controversy surrounding Donald Trump‘s presidency. With breaking news hitting every day, following all of the twists and turns is a daunting task.

Luckily, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver does a great job of recapping complex political maneuverings, and does so in a way that makes it all easy to understand. That’s exactly what happened tonight as the show tackled the modern-day version of Watergate, appropriately dubbed “Stupid Watergate.”

Originally, Oliver planned to cover the TSA, and against all odds, he managed to deliver a three-minute version of what should have been a half-hour diatribe. He devoted the remainder of the episode to Stupid Watergate, not because he wanted to, but because it would be impossible not to cover such a circus. Not to mention, there are some pressing questions that warrant exploration, including, most important: “Is this real life?”

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock or otherwise missed all that’s happened this past week, here’s a quick overview.

On Monday, we learned that President Trump might have shared classified information with top Russian officials, although, of course, Vladimir Putin vehemently denies this. The next day, it came out that Trump had previously asked James Comey to stop investigating Michael Flynn.

After all this, Trump delivered a speech to cadets that essentially consisted of him whining about being bullied. He claimed that no politician in history has been treated worse. As Oliver pointed out, several presidents have been shot, so Trump’s complaint doesn’t hold much sway.

If all that’s not bad enough, all signs point to Trump referring to Comey as a “nut job” in front of Russian officials. He also reportedly told his guests that firing Comey has taken off a great deal of pressure.

The “shortest possible summation of last week’s events” lasted nearly half the episode, but eventually Oliver was able to move on to why all this is so important. It’s highly indicative of obstruction of justice, making impeachment a real possibility.

As Oliver reminds us, impeachment won’t make things all rosy in the United States. Remember, Mike Pence is next in line. In other words, it’s going to be a tough few years no matter what happens.
