Tom Cruise Says Top Gun Is Getting a Sequel 30 Years After the Original

Hold the phone, die-hard Maverick and Goose fans (may the latter R.I.P.) — Tom Cruise just dropped a major bomb during an interview with Australia’s Sunrise on Tuesday afternoon. Finally, 30 years after the fact, Top Gun is getting a sequel.

Sure, there have been rumors over the years. Reports of a sequel have cycled through the headlines, but no such follow-up film to the 1986 classic ever came to fruition. Until, it would seem, now.

“It’s true. Yeah, it’s true,” Cruise told Sunrise while promoting his new movie, The Mummy. “You know what? I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening, it is definitely happening.”

Cruise further revealed, “You’re the first people that I’ve really said it [to]. This is going to happen.”

Naturally, this revelation spawns countless questions we likely won’t get the answers to anytime soon. Did Maverick marry Charlie? Are they still together? Will Kelly McGillis reprise her role as Charlie? What about Val Kilmer? Will he return as Iceman?

And while Anthony Edwards can’t bring Goose back to life, can we at least get a few flashback cameos from everyone’s favorite wingman?

If you’re still feeling skeptical about this new development, rest assured that all systems seem to be a go — as of press time, Cruise’s IMDb has been updated with the announcement of Top Gun 2, listing him as Maverick. So feel free to get excited, you guys.

Although Cruise has had a bit of a rocky go of things over the last few years where public opinion is concerned, a nostalgic film reminding everyone of his heyday could be just what the veteran actor needs to restore his once undeniable star appeal.

It remains to be seen whether Maverick made good on his promise to become a flight instructor, but we sure look forward to finding out in the (hopefully) near future.
