From day one, it was clear that Season 12 of The Voice would be all about Alicia Keys. She didn’t make any overt efforts to hog all of the attention, but she did so nonetheless with her beautiful voice, her eloquent feedback and her killer outfits. We just couldn’t take our eyes off her.

It’s only appropriate, then, that Keys emerged victorious during her second and final season. Of course, most of the credit goes to her talented contestant Chris Blue, but she made all the right choices and provided him with exceptional feedback. Strategic coaching is critical, and Blue certainly received it while working with Keys.
Sadly, this is it for Keys on The Voice. And unlike many coaches, who keep the possibility of a return open, she claims to be done for good. She admitted some time ago that this is her very last season. That being said, her limited time on the show may have actually benefited her team. As she admitted earlier this year, “I am excited for this; it’s like a finale for me. That’s why I’m so passionate about my team.”

It will be impossible to truly fill Keys’ shoes, but new coaches Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson will bring something very valuable to the show: experience as a reality TV contestant. Keys believes that they will relate better to the competitors than any other judge, and as a result, provide more accurate feedback. She’s probably right, but there’s only one Alicia Keys, and we’re sad to see her go.

It’s unfortunate that Keys is ending her tenure on The Voice so soon, but at least she was able to end with a win. This certainly isn’t the last we’ll see of her, for inspired by the many artists with whom she worked, she’s moving on to a variety of new and exciting projects. We can’t wait to see what Keys has in store and how she’ll continue to impact the music industry.
