Law & Order: SVU‘s Season Finale Is Going to Throw You for a Loop

Law and Order: SVU fans (i.e., everyone), the season finale is clearly going to be a doozy!

It’s going to blow so many of our minds, the show’s star and executive producer Mariska Hargitay can’t even keep her mouth shut about it before it airs.

Hargitay was on the red carpet at her Joyful Heart Foundation Gala this week, and couldn’t resist spilling just a little bit to reporters about the two-hour finale, which airs tonight. Don’t worry, though — no spoilers!

“I’ve got to tell you, it’s so good,” Hargitay gushed. “It’s compelling; it’s absolutely frightening. It’s a rough episode, and I am so incredibly proud of it.”

(OK, now some mild spoilers ahead.)

The two-part episode starts off with “American Dream,” a segment about a Muslim family that loses a daughter to a hate crime. There’s a witness to the crime, but that person ends up getting deported, leading to charges against the suspect being dropped. The second part of the finale, entitled “Sanctuary,” follows the public unrest that turns violent as detectives work to find the evidence that will put their suspect back behind bars.

Peter Scanavino, who plays Detective Carisi on the show, has also spoken out about the upcoming episode, but also without revealing much to fans. He described the finale as “gruesome,” adding, “it’s some pretty horrible people that we have to track down.”

He continued, “There’s a lot of frustration involved in terms of trying to do what’s right… It’s two hours, just settle in and say, ‘That’s going to be the night,’ and just watch.”

The season finale airs on NBC tonight beginning at 9/8c.
