A Silent Video Helped Gina Rodriguez Open Up About Her Anxiety

Remaining one of the most outspoken actors on issues relevant to women right now, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez opened up about her anxiety on Instagram. The touching talking point was included in a recent post of Rodriguez’s, which included a 10-second video portrait created by her friend, Oslo-based artist Anton Soggiu.

For the portrait, Soggiu captured Rodriguez standing in front of the camera for 10 seconds, looking directly into the camera and simply being. You can see that Rodriguez smiles gently for most of the video, but there’s a soft radiance about her. She’s makeup-free and sporting a New York Yankees baseball cap.

The video is a thing of beauty, of course, but it is also the caption that truly brings home just how inspiring the post can be. Rodriguez began the photo caption thusly: “It’s always great to be in front of his lens but this time it was just me. Bare and exposed in the streets of la. No makeup. No styling. Just me.”

She continued, opening up about how this portrait acted as a kind of therapeutic pathway between herself and her anxiety, where she could confront it without it getting the better of her. “I suffer from anxiety. And watching this clip I could see how anxious I was but I empathize with myself. I wanted to protect her and tell her it’s ok to be anxious, there is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail. I like watching this video. It makes me uncomfortable but there is a freedom I feel maybe even an acceptance. This is me. Puro Gina.”

It sounds like a simple statement, but one can only imagine how difficult it was for Rodriguez to get vulnerable in that way. She has always been one to discuss tough and important, frequently feminist, issues with her fans and the general public. Be they issues like equal pay or mental health, there’s no doubt Rodriguez’s head and heart are in the right place.
