June 1 kicks off Pride Month, and Billboard, the music news outlet, asked a gaggle of musicians to write love letters to the LGBTQ community to show support and spread love. Some artists include Britney Spears, Barbra Streisand and Elton John. One letter that stood out was pop star Selena Gomez’s.
Gomez writes her letter from the angle that while there is still work to be done in terms of worldwide acceptance, she grew up in a time where there had been a more acceptance of the LGBTQ community than even 10 years before.

While a lot of these letters, like John’s and RuPaul’s, come from a place inside the community, Gomez’s is a look from the outside starting at a very young age.
She writes, “I remember as a young child going to brunch on Sundays with my mom and her group of friends. I had no idea they were gay as I didn’t even comprehend what that meant at the time. All I knew is that I loved being surrounded by these kind, fun and loving friends my mother had around her. I definitely give credit to her for raising me in an environment that was incredibly open-minded and non-judgemental.”

I think a lot of us can relate to this kind of love-is-love-is-love childhood, and it’s wonderful to see young stars who advocate for something not just because it’s right for their image, but because it’s truly how they were brought up, before they were famous.
Gomez also goes on to reflect on her 16th birthday party, where she writes that her mom “also surprised me… with a performance by the most beautiful drag queen singing my favorite song. I don’t think many 16-year-olds can say that!”
