A lot of Hollywood is vocal about pushing for stricter gun control in the United States (see: Everytown for Gun Safety’s promotional videos, which have featured Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Schumer, Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Aniston, Sofía Vergara and others), and one of the famous faces currently speaking up is actor Julianne Moore.

Moore has participated in those videos and been outspoken in other ways about wanting stricter measures limiting who can have access to guns in the U.S. In a recent interview with People magazine, Moore revealed that her now-teenage daughter is her inspiration for getting so involved in the fight.
It all started on the day of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Moore recalled. “My daughter was 10 and was coming to work with me on a movie set. I asked hair, makeup, crew and other actors, ‘Please don’t mention this to her.’ I was going to wait to tell her with her dad,” she said. “But somebody posted something about it on her monitored Instagram account. She said, ‘Mommy, did a bunch of little kids get shot today?'”

Moore continued, “It occurred to me that I wasn’t protecting my daughter by trying to keep the news away from her, so I wanted to get involved.”
Soon after, Moore reached out to Everytown for Gun Safety to see how she could help spread the organization’s message. “This is not an anti-gun or pro-gun argument. It’s a safety issue,” Moore said. “In our country we have a right to bear arms. But we also have a responsibility to bear arms safely. On an average day, seven kids or teens are killed by guns. With regulation, you reduce deaths. We’re not talking about something outrageous. We’re talking about closing the background loophole, when guns are allowed to be sold without background checks, so there are fewer illegal guns in the world.”
