Cher’s Life Story Will Hit the Broadway Stage in 2018

If there is any living musician more iconic than Cher, I want to hear who it is. Go ahead. I’ll wait. No? No one? That’s what I thought.

What is almost as iconic as Cher herself is her life story. That’s why it’s the perfect subject for a Broadway musical. And that’s why it’s becoming one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a musical of Cher’s life is set to hit Broadway sometime in 2018, and we cannot wait.

Cher officially announced the forthcoming musical on Twitter this week, letting us all know in all caps that there will be “ACTORS” and “DANCERS” and “SINGERS.” Oh boy.

Obviously, Cher’s life is made for this because the music is already written. The show will feature songs from her career, but hopefully also some original showstoppers. The production crew is already star-studded: Jason Moore (Avenue Q, Pitch Perfect) is set to direct, Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) is set to write the book and Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) and Flody Suarez (Rise) are set to produce.

There’s already been at least one secret reading of the show, and Cher tweeted about attending that back in January.

“I sobbed & laughed,& I was prepared not to like it. Audience clapped after songs,& gave it standing ovation,” she wrote.

According to Huffington Post, three different actors will play Cher at different points in her life. Other characters include her first husband, singer Sonny Bono (of course), Cher’s parents, designer Bob Mackie, music producer David Geffen, musician and Cher’s second husband Gregg Allman, film director Robert Altman, former boyfriend Rob Camilletti and Sigmund Freud.
