Before we get into this, I gotta confess: I will watch any Christmas movie at any time and be delighted by it. From Bad Santa all the way to those terrible, vaguely holiday-themed Lifetime romance movies, I love them all. Christmas is my happy place.

That said, Melissa McCarthy‘s Christmas movie just got greenlighted and I am stoked. McCarthy is producing and starring and her husband, Ben Falcone, is directing Margie Claus, the story of a daring rescue effort organized by Mrs. Claus after Santa goes missing while delivering presents on Christmas Eve. McCarthy’s Mrs. Claus will put together a ragtag team of rescuers and leave the North Pole for the first time in decades in order to save her husband. Apparently they’re going for an Elf vibe with this, and I totally see it. Also, it’s a musical, which will mark the first time McCarthy sings on-screen, but it’s cool. I’m still here for it.

Honestly, the premise just sounds so delightful, I hardly care about the quality of the comedy. This one could go one of two ways, though. McCarthy is more than capable of smart, punchy comedy (like in Ghostbusters and St. Vincent, and during her hilarious post-election work on Saturday Night Live). But she also kind of has a habit of using her body as a prop, playing the fat, hapless ne’er-do-well (like in Bridesmaids and Spy). With her in the leading role — and playing a character who is traditionally plump and accepted that way — it’s hard to see Margie Claus going down that path, but the possibility is still there.

Margie Claus is set to be released by New Line Cinemas sometime around Thanksgiving.
