The 2017 Emmy Nominations Are in, & There Are a Few Surprises

The 69th Emmy Awards nominations have dropped, and we can’t say we saw all of these coming. Hello to all the nominees, including the surprises and the big frontrunners!

HBO‘s Game of Thrones started too late to be eligible this year, but the network still came in strong — Westworld tied with Saturday Night Live for most nominations at 22 each. Also in the top three were FX anthology Feud: Bette and Joan and Netflix‘s hit Stranger Things with 18 nods each, as well as Veep, which netted 17 nominations this year.

HBO led the nominations, increasing its count from 94 last year to 110 this year even without Game of Thrones in the running, and it’s no wonder considering hits like Westworld, Veep, Big Little Lies, The Night Of and Silicon Valley. Netflix also saw a sizable increase, from 56 nods last year to 91 this year. NBC saw a huge increase thanks to This Is Us, which put the network in third place for overall nominations.

Some notable titles were missing, though. Shows with high viewership — The Leftovers, The Walking Dead, Empire and The Americans — were left off the nomination list. Lena Dunham’s final season of Girls got no love and neither did Oprah Winfrey, who gave a stunning performance in HBO’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. What gives?

Check out a partial list of the nominees below. Are you as surprised and excited as we were by these noms?
