Angelina Jolie has finally spoken up about her very public divorce from Brad Pitt. After 12 years of marriage and six children, I would think it would be hard to keep that all bottled up.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor spoke openly about her journey and her kids’ experience within the last year. “Things got bad,” she said. “I didn’t want to use that word… Things became difficult.”

This past September, one of the most famous couples in the world called it quits, and many were completely shocked to hear that the marriage wasn’t going as smoothly as Pitt and Jolie let on.

“It’s just been the hardest time,” Jolie said. “And we’re just kind of coming up for air. We’re all trying to do our best to heal our family.”

She also plainly stated that the globe-trotting lifestyle of the Jolie-Pitt family was not the issue that led to the divorce. “Our lifestyle was not in any way a negative. That was not the problem. That is and will remain one of the wonderful opportunities we are able to give our children… They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.”

All the while, Jolie talked about how she went through a bout of Bell’s palsy, a condition that caused one side of her face to droop because of damage to facial nerves, that she has since recovered from. She discussed the role of the condition and how it took a toll on her as a mother and a woman. “Sometimes women in families put themselves last until it manifests itself in their own health.”

The events leading up to the divorce filing include some harsh allegations involving Pitt and the couple’s oldest son, Maddox, 14. Pitt allegedly became “verbally and physically abusive” at one point, and five days later, Jolie filed for the divorce. Jolie concluded that the events leading up to the divorce filing are what the family has to heal from. “They’re not healing from divorce… They’re healing from some… life, from things in life.”
