Hot on the heels of her husband’s impressive showing at the 2017 Stanley Cups, Carrie Underwood is proving once more that she’ll always be Mike Fisher’s No. 1 fan. In a touching tribute, the country superstar took to Instagram to express her pride and support following Fisher’s surprise retirement.
On Thursday, Aug. 3, The Tennessean newspaper published a heartfelt letter by Fisher, who is the captain of the Nashville Predators’ hockey team. In it, the 37-year-old explained that hanging up his skates was by no means an easy call.

“This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, but I know I’ve made the right one. I’ve decided to retire from the NHL. I kept praying for peace about the next step in my life. A peace that said, ‘this is God’s will for your future. A peace that said whether or not this was the right time to walk away,” Fisher shared.
“I don’t believe it came in a single instance or some aha moment, but as time passed, I gradually became certain that it was right for me to retire,” he continued. “I believe God gave me the ability to play hockey, and I was helped by dozens of individuals along the way, so it’s not just up to me on when it’s time to say goodbye.”

Ultimately, Fisher feels good about the decision to move on, noting that he is “looking forward to a future that includes a lot more time with [his] family.” Underwood, who was a constant (and outspoken!) presence at Fisher’s games, seems pretty stoked about that part too.

In response to the news breaking, she posted a photo of Fisher during a game, saying, “Captain @mfisher1212, I sure am going to miss watching you play and cheering you on with the rest of Smashville, but I so look forward to seeing what God has in store for you in this next chapter of your life.”
She went on to applaud the effort he always gives on the rink — and off.
“Isaiah and I love you so much and are so excited to be able to have you home a lot more,” she gushed. “We can’t wait to cheer on the @predsnhl WITH you in the stands!”
