GoT Just Casually Dropped the Biggest Reveal in the Show’s History, NBD

SPOILER ALERT: Please do not make me responsible for spoiling one of the biggest and best moments in Game of Thrones history for you. Don’t continue reading this article unless you’ve watched the latest episode of the show, called “Eastwatch.”

So we just found out tonight, officially, on Game of Thrones that Jon Snow is not a bastard. He is a legitimate Targaryen. And the news changes everything. And, I mean, really nothing. Except my level of feels just went through the roof. And, well, now he really is a king in the bloodline sense. Oh, and he has a better claim to the throne than Daenerys. So, yup, “everything” was accurate.

Now, you may remember from last season we saw Jon’s birth thanks to Bran’s raven sight. Lyanna, Ned Stark’s sister, gave birth to baby Jon in the Tower of Joy after she was “kidnapped” by Rhaegar Targaryen. The semantics of this whole arrangement have always been up for debate.

Lyanna was supposed to marry Robert Baratheon, but it was believed Rhaegar took her against her will and raped her. Other fan theories have suggested the two were in love and actually ran away together. But either way that didn’t change Jon Snow’s bastard status since Rhaegar was married to another woman, not Lyanna… or was he?

Thanks to Gilly, who found High Septon Maynard’s detailed accounts of his bowel movements, the game of thrones has officially been changed. Forever.

Not only did High Septon Maynard drop some knowledge about some shit (oh, yes, the puns), but he also just happened to casually write that he provided Rhaegar an annulment from his marriage to Elia, Oberyn’s sister, and a new marriage to a different woman that same night. We can safely assume that woman was Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark’s sister. Meaning Rhaegar and Lyanna had a legitimate marriage. Meaning Jon Snow is not a bastard. I’m gonna say that again so you can let it really sink in. Jon Snow is not a bastard. He is a true Targaryen, and now has a legitimate claim to rule that not even Daenerys can argue about.

Oh, and thanks to High Septon Maynard’s book paired with Bran’s visions, we can safely assume that somewhere in the very near future of the show, these pieces are going to be put together. And Jon and the rest of the Westeros world will find out about it.

Until that moment, the audience gets to freak out incessantly online. I’m not even trying to contain the emotions I have over this epic moment in the show, and Twitter is doing a pretty bang-up job of summarizing my feels.

Ahem, Daenerys, I think it’s actually your turn to bend the knee since Jon is actually the rightful heir to the Targaryen line. Oh, and you’re dragons already don’t seem to mind…
