Tina Fey’s Weekend Update Return Is Everything You Hoped It Would Be

Tina Fey does it again! After a long time out of the Weekend Update spotlight, the actor returned to her old stomping grounds (now its own show) to extol the virtues of something she called “sheet-caking” and deliver some truly incisive jokes with Weekend Update host Colin Jost.

After a weekend filled with sadness and anger over the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, Fey was able to give us all a laugh on Thursday night on Weekend Update. Fey, who is a University of Virginia alumnus, kicked it off with a self-deprecating joke about her time at the school.

“It’s a beautiful school, and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there,” she said. “And I graduated a virgin, and I still liked it. That’s how good the architecture is down there.”

But not to be deterred from keeping up the lively yet politically charged tone of Weekend Update, Fey made some fairly sharp quips about the events in Charlottesville and took the time to introduce viewers to the fairly radical idea of “sheet-caking.”

“Find a local business you support, maybe a Jewish-run bakery or an African-American-run bakery,” she explained. “Order a cake with the American flag on it and just eat it,” she joked as she dove right into a cake sitting in front of her.

She also shared that it is a female-driven activity. “Sheet-caking is a grassroots movement,” Fey explained. “Most of the women I know have been doing it once a week since the election.”

With a mouth half-full of said cake, she commented on how to handle those white supremacist political protesters like the ones we saw at Charlottesville. “The next time you see a bunch of white boys in polo shirts screaming about taking our country back,” Fey said, “scream, ‘It’s not our country. We stole it from the Native Americans and when they have a peaceful protest at Standing Rock, we shoot at them with rubber bullets. We let you shameless turds march through the streets with semi-automatic weapons.’”

In her parting thoughts, she gave the most sage advice of all. “Treat these rallies like the opening of a thoughtful movie with two female leads — don’t show up,” Fey summed up. “Let these morons scream into the empty air.”
