George and Amal Clooney are responding to the hate in Charlottesville with an act of pure love, and a generous one at that. The philanthropic pair donated $1 million on Monday, Aug. 21 as part of an ongoing effort to fight hate groups.

The sizable donation was delivered in the form of a grant from the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which the couple co-founded in 2016 to “advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world.”
In making the donation, Clooney Foundation partnered with the Southern Poverty Law Center — a nonprofit similarly committed to combating hate groups and other domestic extremists. Currently, the SPLC is tracking nearly 2,000 extremist groups operating here in the United States.

“Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate,” the Clooneys told Us Weekly via statement, alluding to President Donald Trump’s prior comment blaming “both sides” for the fatal violence that occurred at the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.
“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States,” the Clooneys continued in the joint statement. “What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”
