They’re kind of rivals in that they both host late-night talk shows, even though their shows have only been in competing time slots for a few years. But Leno has been a subject of Kimmel’s ridicule for a long time, on the air and off.

Now, however, they seem to have buried the hatchet. And there’s a really sweet reason for why these two longtime enemies have learned to get along: Kimmel’s baby son, who has had health struggles since he was born.

Back in May, Kimmel announced on his show that he and his wife, Molly McNearey, had welcomed their son, William John Kimmel, and that baby William had undergone surgery almost immediately after his birth to repair a congenital heart defect. That’s a terrifying thing for a new parent to have to go through, and even amid their feud, Leno could recognize that. So he reached out to Kimmel, and the two have settled their past differences, Kimmel shared.

“Jay and I have made peace,” he explained on a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s “Awards Chatter” podcast. “After my son had his operation, he called me and he was very nice.”

Kimmel continued, “What he did was, you can’t argue with his success, his longevity.” He then added a nice compliment for Leno, saying, “I will say, when I was in high school, going to college, he was one of my all-time favorite comics.”
