Put down the gossip rags and secondhand accounts in the tabloids because we finally — finally! — have some firsthand insight into Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s relationship. That’s right. Markle opened up about her royal relationship to Vanity Fair in an interview that was part of her covering the October 2017 issue. Markle didn’t reveal too, too much (so temper your expectations), but what did shine through was that she is deeply in love with the redheaded royal.

First, we need to talk about Markle’s VF cover. She looks absolutely radiant, photographed in an extreme close-up, and it even looks like she went for a makeup-free look — a sure sign that she is confident in her own skin. It’s not difficult to see why she was chosen for the cover, but to see that she’s eschewing tons of makeup in favor of promoting natural beauty is just another reason for the public to love her.

In the interview, Markle got candid about the fact that there were some highs and lows to being in a relationship with a prince. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves — some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she told VF.
But luckily for Markle, it appears that she isn’t alone if her journey to find stability and safety in such a public relationship. “[R]ight out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.” Can I also note how adorable it is that she is publicly calling Prince Harry her boyfriend? It’s a small detail, but meaningful nonetheless.

Markle also made it clear that even though her whole world has changed since the news that they were dating became public, she is still the same down-to-earth, hardworking woman she always was. The only thing that’s different now is she has a man in her life who she is very much in love with.
“I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple,” she said. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news. And I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
