On July 14, 2017, Chester Bennington and his Linkin Park bandmates Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn took a ride around LA with comedian Ken Jeong for James Corden‘s classic Carpool Karaoke bit. Less than a week later, Bennington was gone, and Corden decided to withhold the segment out of respect for the family.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Corden explained his decision, saying, “We will approach it in whichever manner his family, or the people that were involved in that episode, however they would like it to be handled. We consider it to be not our decision to make. We will navigate it as delicately as possible and just adhere to whatever wishes they would want to because I don’t think there’s any other way we could deal with it, really.”

Corden must have gotten the go-ahead from Bennington’s friends and family, though, because the episode has finally been released. In full disclosure: It will make you cry… both happy tears and sad tears.
Judging by this video, Bennington seemed to be in good spirits the week leading up to his death. His widow, Talinda Bennington, has confirmed as much — sharing a photo of the happy (funny) family eating every-flavored jelly beans in their last few days together.

Tragically, as Talinda pointed out, depression wears many masks. But here’s hoping he’s rocking out in that great big Carpool Karaoke in the sky right now.
At the time of his suicide, Bennington was only 41 years old.
