Kerry Washington’s New TV Show Will Be Nothing Like Scandal

As Scandal rolls toward what will most likely be an intensely dramatic series finale at the end of Season 7 and the future looks unknown for many of the show’s stars, there’s at least one actor whose work is taking them in a different and thoroughly exciting direction. After seven seasons of playing Olivia Pope, actor Kerry Washington is trading her white hat on Scandal for a producer’s hat.

Announced in Variety on Tuesday, we’ve learned that Washington will serve as a producer on Five Points, a drama that will air on Facebook‘s (yes, Facebook) new platform for original shows, Watch. As Facebook looks to move into said original programming — a place we might not have thought Facebook would move into in years past — this will no doubt mean that Washington is involving herself in something truly unique.

Five Points will be “set on the South Side of Chicago and takes a look at high school students from five unique points of view. When a life-changing event occurs, all of these different perspectives will be necessary to understand the truth,” as Variety reports. The show, which sounds akin to Netflix’s hit show 13 Reasons Why, will no doubt pique interest in potential viewers, whether it’s because of this storytelling method or because of Washington’s involvement or, just maybe, because Facebook (folks, I still can’t get over the fact this is happening on Facebook) is streaming this exciting new show.

As a producer, it looks like Washington will have a major creative voice and serious input on the show. Part of the Five Points announcement included this line: “‘We are thrilled to have the incredibly talented Kerry Washington join our producing team,” said Jon Avnet, co-founder of Indigenous Media. ‘Her strong perspective coupled with Thomas Carter’s gifted direction will take Five Points to the next level.'” Washington certainly deserves no less than to be calling the shots, but what the shots will look like will be interesting to see.

This show is still in the early stages of production, so for now, we get to enjoy watching Washington wrap up her run on Scandal. As for the future, it certainly looks bright for this fan-favorite actor.
