Amal Clooney Is Co-Hosting the Biggest Event in Fashion Next Year

Amal Clooney is really leaning into her new life as an A-list celebrity. While she’s always been a badass, fighting for women’s and human rights all over the world, she wasn’t really famous until she married George Clooney, even though she absolutely deserved to be. But now? Definitely a celeb. There’s proof. She just got tapped to host the 2018 Met Gala.

She’ll be joined by Rihanna and Donatella Versace to throw the annual who’s-who event of the Hollywood A-list. The year’s theme is going to be Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination according to People magazine.

The Gala theme will tie in with the Heavenly Bodies exhibit Versace is sponsoring at the museum from May 10 to Oct. 8. The New York Times also reports that New York’s Roman Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal Dolan, will have an invite to the festivities, though he has yet to confirm whether he’ll actually make an appearance. The religious theme is different from past Met Galas, which tend to focus on specific designers for their themes.

There is some concern that so much religion might be controversial, but Met Gala staff is already on top of that.

“Every show we do at the Costume Institute has that potential,” Andrew Bolton, exhibit curator for Heavenly Bodies told the Times. “This one perhaps more than any other. But the focus is on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology. Beauty has often been a bridge between believers and unbelievers.”
