In case you somehow missed it, Oprah Winfrey gave a truly incredible, inspiring speech on Sunday night at the 75th Golden Globes. If you weren’t watching the ceremony and you still haven’t caught a video of her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award, stop reading and do that now. If you’ve already seen it, watch it again, because it’s that good.

OK, now that that’s out of the way, let’s take a look at how some people are reacting to Winfrey’s speech. Since it aired, there have been a lot of whispers, steadily growing louder, that her speech sounded a little… political. There was the compelling anecdote. There was the emotional touch. There was the call to action. Winfrey’s speech was polished and effective and wouldn’t have sounded out of place at all on the campaign trail for a presidential bid. Is Winfrey gearing up to run for president?
A lot of people seem to think so, and Twitter lit up with people actually calling for it.

OK, internet. Sit down. We need to have a talk.

Have we learned nothing from the last year? We just elected a celebrity with no governing experience to be president, and can I kindly ask you all to think about how that has gone for us? We’re constantly on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea. We’ve undone decades of work to protect the environment and slow climate change. Our reputation has been, possibly irreversibly, damaged in the stadium of world affairs. Neo-Nazis marched in the streets, fam. This is where we are right now (and it needs to change. Like, yesterday).
Donald Trump is clearly too much of a wildcard for the role he is currently in, and with zero previous political experience, it’s hardly favorable to champion a future candidate with similarly absent qualifications. Even if that person is the beloved Oprah Winfrey. Admittedly, Winfrey has more poise and grace than we may ever see from Trump, but she also has no relevant experience. When did we decide it’s OK to elect someone to one of the most difficult and important jobs on the planet without them having done anything to show they’re capable of doing that job?

If we truly have sunk to a point at which we must have a celebrity president, then sure, Oprah Winfrey is better than Trump. But seriously, guys, let’s get it together.
