9 Things You Missed if You Didn’t Watch the Critics’ Choice Awards

We are in the throes of awards season now, and you know what that means: lots of timely cultural commentary, feisty anecdotes, amusing (if not somewhat overly contrived) skits, lots and lots of beautiful fashion moments and big award wins. It’s a season many of us look forward to, thrive on and delight in watching. We live for the waving of the envelope, the rip of the paper and the reveal of the winner’s name. We love to watch the winner take the stage and give their thanks. It’s a season of good things, truly, and we all deserve something good in our lives, right?

As the 2018 awards season rolls merrily along, the latest show to hit our television screens was the 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by Olivia Munn. This show gives the Broadcast Film Critics Association a chance at voting for their favorites in film and television throughout the previous year, and thus, while lots of the nominees are familiar, the results always risk being different.

While big winners at the Critics’ Choice Awards this year include The Shape of Water and Big Little Lies, there are likely other great moments from the award show that you missed or deserve to be reminded of because they’re just that good. Take a peek at the list below to see what you might have missed.

1. Olivia Munn’s feisty & funny opening monologue

Every moment of Munn’s monologue was fun, but the moment when she and Saturday Night Live alum Jay Pharoah join forces to do a rap for the Critics’ Choice Awards is truly something else.

2. Brooklynn Prince’s endearing acceptance speech

Prince won Best Young Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and as a young actor who has received major praise for her performance in The Florida Project, this will likely be her first in a long string of awards. Watch her acceptance speech and try not to tear up from its genuine sweetness.

3. Kumail Nanjiani thanking white men

While accepting his award, Nanjiani wryly thanked the white men who made his Big Sick win possible in his casual, offhanded kind of way. Pure gold.

4. Gal Gadot receiving the #SeeHer award

Gadot’s #SeeHer award speech was nothing less than well-stated, beautiful, empowering and absolutely, 100 percent wonderful. Seriously, go watch the entire thing right now.

5. Margot Robbie’s surprised face at winning for I, Tonya

Margot Robbie’s delightful surprised face is literally everything. I could bask in the warmth of that radiant smile.

6. Alexander Skarsgård’s losing battle with the microphone

Poor Skarsgård! It looks like the folks in charge of adjusting the microphone height didn’t account for the fact that a super-tall Swede would be getting onstage.

7. Olivia Munn & Niecy Nash roasting the men of Hollywood

Munn and Claws star Niecy Nash didn’t hold back when the opportunity arose for them to get their jabs in at the men of Hollywood. Holding glasses of Champagne, the women sarcastically “toasted” the men who have done the bare minimum in not being creepy or treated them poorly.

Among the hottest toasts made during the bit was Munn’s, who shaded Harvey Weinstein’s alleged behavior. “I’d like to raise a glass to that studio executive who had me meet him in the hotel conference room rather than his actual hotel room.”

8. Rachel Brosnahan’s rallying cry for Time’s Up

Brosnahan won yet again for her performance as Midge Maisel in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. After the requisite thanks to cast and crew, Brosnahan used her time onstage to encourage everyone to donate to Times Up and explained why the Time’s Up movement was so important.

9. This adorable bonding moment between two great actors

Angelina Jolie took some time to talk to Brooklynn Prince in between commercial breaks and ended the conversation with a hug. Be still, my beating heart!
