After Donald Trump‘s latest (and possibly lowest) incendiary, racist public comment, how about we all just let Anderson Cooper speak for us? Cooper has some pretty deep emotional ties to Haiti — he reported from the ground there after the island nation was devastated by an earthquake in 2010. Trump’s description of Haiti (as well as several other places, like El Salvador and all of Africa) as a “shithole” is where Cooper draws the line.

Getting visibly emotional on Thursday, Cooper said the president’s comment was flat-out “racist,” and implored his viewers not to dance around that.
“The president of the United States is tired of so many black people coming into this country. Tired of immigrants from Haiti and Africa being allowed in,” Cooper said. “Perhaps the White House feels the president’s remarks will be well-received in some parts of this country, among some parts of the president’s base, and perhaps that is true but it doesn’t make what he said any less ignorant or any less racist. Not racial. Not racially charged, racist. Let’s not kid ourselves. Let’s not pretend or dance around it. The sentiment the president expressed today is a racist sentiment.”

Cooper continued, “Tired of Africans and Haitians, the president said he would like to bring more people from countries like Norway. Norway, which population is overwhelmingly of Nordic descent. White people, in other words.”

Trump now denies that he ever called those countries “shitholes,” but the White House has not denied it, and several witnesses to the comment have confirmed that Trump said it. Is this Trump’s new low point? Only time will tell.
