Lauer’s former coanchor, Savannah Guthrie, and Hoda Kotb, who took over Lauer’s spot when he was fired, appeared this week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they talked about what it’s been like to adjust to the new reality at Today. And honestly? It’s not as bad as it could have been. Ratings actually went up after Lauer was fired, and now Guthrie and Kotb are making history as the first female team to anchor the show.
“It was hard, and like everyone saw, we went through it,” Guthrie said during their Tonight Show appearance. “But something really lovely and positive has happened. And I think that’s where we’re focused.”

Kotb added, “Savannah and I started anchoring together, and it was just weird. It was like if you’ve ever met a friend and had a great moment where you say to yourself, ‘Wow, that was so much fun.’ It worked. I think we had an instant thing.”
Viewers clearly agree. Guthrie and Kotb have great chemistry, and they’re already leading Today into its new future.
“Hoda said it was like a first date, and I was like, ‘And I’m easy and desperate, so no problem!'” Guthrie joked. “It just clicked, and it felt so good. We’re so happy.”
