Even though social media would like to see Ann Curry sipping tea over the firing of Today‘s Matt Lauer, she really isn’t doing any of that. Curry has been the model of grace on her entire press tour for her new PBS show, We’ll Meet Again.

On Monday night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host really wanted to know how she felt after she heard the news about Lauer losing his job on the NBC morning show.
“When Mr. Lauer was let go at NBC, were you aware that Twitter blew up?” he asked as he shared some of the tweets with Curry.
Even though she laughed, Curry had a pretty diplomatic answer.

“The truth is that I was raised Catholic by a Buddhist. So I think about the Catholic guilt mixed with the karma, worries, the intensity of that,” she shared. “It was like all of a sudden, my brain — think Game of Thrones — the wall, it went up. There was this whole wall of, ‘Uh-oh, you can’t talk like that. You can’t think like that.’ So I didn’t actually get to enjoy it.”
When Colbert said it was Lauer’s karma to deal with, Curry took the high road and explained why she didn’t relish in his downfall.
“Well, that’s a good point, but… also, you have to think about the pain,” she said. “You know, a lot of people have suffered. So I haven’t had a chance to celebrate for a lot of reasons.”

Today fans appreciate Curry’s kindness, but they certainly wouldn’t blame her for having one moment of celebration given the dismal way the show pushed her out in 2012. It made for the most awkward and painful moments on morning TV as Curry gave a tearful goodbye speech while Lauer looked on.
Colbert summed it up best when he told Curry, “You’re a very nice person.”
Indeed, she is.
