Jennifer Garner’s Got a New Job

It looks like Jennifer Garner is ready to put her Instagram cooking show on the back burner (no pun intended) and is officially making her big return to television. It’s been a hot minute since Garner graced the small screen, with Alias being her last notable TV appearance — and that was back in 2006. It’s definitely time she got back in the TV groove, because darn it, sis, we miss you.

Garner’s teed up a heck of a TV return, locking herself in with what will no doubt be a hit show in Camping, a limited series comedy coming to HBO. The show, as The Hollywood Reporter describes it at least, sounds like a total hoot. “The series kicks off on Walt’s 45th birthday, which was supposed to be a delightful weekend back to nature, at least according to his obsessively organized and aggressively controlling wife Kathryn,” the news outlet describes. “But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier than thou ex-best friend and a free-spirited Tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman on woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten. Plus, bears,” THR jokes.

While many of Camping‘s characters have yet to be cast (as far we know), we do know Garner will be playing the aforementioned Kathryn. As THR describes her, “Garner’s Kathryn Siddell-Bauers is described as a controlling L.A. mom who is far less cheerful than her Lululemons imply. She controls the proceedings with an iron grip until she’s faced with a woman who undoes all her best-laid plans. [Jenni] Konner and Dunham described the part as ‘messy, tough and provocative and really, really fun.'”

OK, count us all the way in for that because I am loving the sound of Garner’s character, which sounds like she gets to channel the somewhat uptight housewife she played in Juno with a dash of backstabbing mom à la Big Little Lies.

Both Dunham and Konner are beyond thrilled to have Garner toplining their next show and made that very clear in a joint statement. “We love Jennifer’s restraint and comedic timing, and we can’t wait for the warmth and intelligence she’ll bring to our central character, Kathryn. It’s truly a dream to have her first on our call sheet. Now we just have to write her some stunts,” they wrote.

Garner hasn’t released her own statement yet, but I’ll hazard a guess she’s just as excited to get back to TV. There’s no word yet when Camping will air, but you can bet your bottom dollar it’s already on my “must binge-watch ASAP” list.
