Michelle Pfeiffer’s Self-Imposed Hiatus From Hollywood Is Over

Michelle Pfeiffer‘s fans probably wondered where she had been, prior to 2017. The ’90s A-lister took a long hiatus, disappearing into private life for years. As it turns out, she was just focusing on being a mom.

“I’ve never lost my love for acting,” she told Vanity Fair last year. “I’m a more balanced person, honestly, when I’m working. But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kids’ schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhireable. And then… I don’t know, time just went on… I disappeared, yeah.”

But Pfeiffer’s role in Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! last year signaled her return, and she acted in three other movies throughout the year, showing she was serious about making a comeback. And she’s now cementing it with a role in the upcoming Where Is Kyra, a film by Nigerian filmmaker Andrew Dosunmu. The first trailer shows us that time away hasn’t made Pfeiffer any less powerful on-screen.

In the movie, Pfeiffer plays the powerful lead, Kyra Johnson, a woman who has lost everything and is fighting to get back on her feet.

“A lot of people end up being there not because of their own fault but because of circumstances,” Dosunmu told Variety. “Most people live one paycheck to another. What happens when you lose your job? You lose everything. That’s what happens to this character. She’s lost her husband. She’s lost her job. She’s lost her mom. And she’s just trying to survive.”

It’s good to see Pfeiffer making her comeback with these powerhouse roles rather than easing into it. We can’t wait to see what’s still to come for her.
