Welp, another one bites the dust. Grey’s Anatomy recently introduced a few fresh faces — thanks to the latest round of interns — but it looks like one of them won’t last long. Jeanine Mason, who plays surgical intern Sam Bello (aka DeLuca’s ex/lover), has officially been cast as the lead in The CW’s Roswell reboot.

According to Deadline, Mason will bring to life Liz Ortecho, a biomedical engineer who reluctantly returns to her hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. Not surprisingly, she has a few skeletons in her closet: her parents are undocumented immigrants, and she is “haunted by a tragic incident.”
Upon her return, Ortecho discovers that her hunky teen crush has traded in his heartthrob badge for an actual police badge. The catch? He’s also secretly an alien. As the two grow closer, she keeps his secret while helping him explore his intergalactic past.
The original Roswell aired from 1999 to 2002 and starred UnREAL‘s Shiri Appleby as the female lead, Liz Parker. Although it didn’t last long, the sci-fi series spawned a cult following eager to see the show brought back to the small screen. Thanks perhaps to their persistence, The CW placed a pilot order for the reboot in January.

And while that all sounds exciting, it means Grey’s fans are losing the one new intern at Grey Sloan Memorial who actually had the potential to turn into an interesting character. (Let’s be real: Can you even remember any of the other new interns?)
Still, it’s hard not to be happy for Mason, who actually began her career as a dancer — she got her big break by winning Season 5 of the reality TV competition So You Think You Can Dance.
Grey’s will likely write her character off the show in order for Mason to honor her new commitment to The CW. But what will that look like? Will she be the first big Grey’s character death of 2018? That would potentially cause some powerful reverberations in DeLuca’s world. Or will the writers leave the door open for Bello to return to Grey Sloan as a surgical intern, in case the Roswell reboot doesn’t pan out as planned?

Stay tuned, fans. Knowing Shonda Rhimes, the show will use Bello’s exit to create some emotional fireworks.
