It’s always impossible to predict how a reboot will fare. They’re all the rage right now, sure, but not every nostalgic revival is destined for greatness. Remember when The CW attempted to bring back Melrose Place in 2009, this time starring Ashlee Simpson? No bueno. Happily for fans of Grace Adler and her zany BFFs, though, Will & Grace — the reboot — is thriving. So much so, in fact, that NBC just gave the beloved series the green light through Season 3. ICYMI, there are still two episodes left to air of the first season (back).

The network has also extended the show’s second season, which is set to premiere in September. Originally, NBC announced a 13-episode second season. However, given the success of the series so far, they opted to add five more episodes for a total of 18. Likewise, the just-announced third season will also have 18 episodes, according to Deadline.

All told, it’s a bit of a fairytale comeback for the series, which first ran from 1998 to 2006. After more than a decade away, Will & Grace teased fans in fall 2016 with a mini-episode centered on the presidential election. When the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, news of an official reboot followed suit.
And not only were fans fortunate enough for the series to have a second coming, but the original cast’s inimitable foursome actually returned: Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes.
“As far as I’m concerned, we can’t get enough of Will & Grace, and 23 more episodes is music to my ears,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. “We’re eternally grateful that Debra, Eric, Sean and Megan feel the same way and wanted to keep this good thing going. I’m overwhelmed by the euphoric response the new show has received from the press and the audience, and my hat is off to the unrivaled writing team of Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, as well as the brilliant directing of Jimmy Burrows, for consistently delivering one of the best shows on television.”

Greenblatt isn’t being hyperbolic about the positive response. The reboot’s first season has quickly risen to the top of the ranks, making it NBC’s No. 1 comedy series. Thanks to the nearly 10 million viewers who tune in each week, Will & Grace is currently the crown jewel of the network’s Must See TV Thursday lineup.
You could say this is one revival that doesn’t look to be in danger of flatlining anytime soon.
