John recently announced his farewell tour (a three-year, 300-show spectacle), and Stewart wasn’t going to, ahem, let the sun go down on a chance to razz his longtime pal. The hilarious mini-roast kicked off when a caller asked Stewart to weigh in on John’s end-of-career news.
“I did email her and said, ‘What, again, dear? And I didn’t hear anything back,” Stewart said of his friend. And the playful prodding didn’t stop there.
Seated next to Cyndi Lauper, Stewart countered that he would never retire. Rather, he’d simply “fade away.” The massive farewell tour? “It stinks of selling tickets,” Stewart trolled. When Lauper joked that it wasn’t a bad idea, Stewart cut in, “It’s dishonest. It’s not rock and roll.”

Ha! Can’t you just imagine John already plotting his revenge?
After all, we know the rock god doesn’t tolerate disrespect — he stormed off the stage recently when a fan approached (and kept touching) his piano. Hilariously enough, this incident actually provided Stewart with even more comedic fodder.
“I sort of understand, because the person kept [tapping him]. I don’t mind it. I love people coming up on stage,” said Stewart. “It’s a laugh, but I can see why he was pissed off with it. I’ve had people come on stage while I was singing and I’ve nearly had my teeth knocked out.”
This isn’t the first time and likely won’t be the last that Stewart took aim at John, or vice versa. The pair have cultivated quite the feisty rapport since they first became friends in the early ’70s. The sparring, according to the rock stars, is rooted in friendly rivalry. But don’t worry — this epic bromance isn’t breaking up anytime soon.

“We try and publicize the fact that we always have a go at each other in the papers, but in fact we do that for reasons only known to us, really,” John said during an interview all the way back in 1983. “We’re actually very good friends.”
