Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato called it quits on their relationship, but that doesn’t mean the now-platonic pair stopped respecting and admiring each other. Valderrama illustrated as much during the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., on Saturday when he praised his ex to ET.

“She’s a hero. She’s a hero to young men and women out there. I think that she’s literally the image of recovery and getting their life together, so I’m excited that she’s there and for this historic moment for young people too,” Valderrama said.
The moment came after Lovato’s poignant performance of her hit song “Skyscraper” in front of the nearly 1 million people who came out to support students in protest of gun violence.
Of course, Valderrama and Lovato weren’t the only celebrities who showed up to lend their voice to the movement. Among the famous faces in the massive crowd were Kim Kardashian, Kanye (and North!) West, George and Amal Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Steven Spielberg, Paul McCartney and Ariana Grande.

Other celebrities who couldn’t attend the march in person sent their support via social media, like Taylor Swift.
Created by student survivors of the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the March for Our Lives honored the students who were lost in the shooting by demanding stricter gun control laws. The fact that so many celebrities joined the cause openly and vocally signals a major shift in the times, says Valderrama.

“They used to tell us when we were young and entering the industry, ‘Oh, you’re an actor, don’t get involved in politics,'” he told ET. “But then you realize that politics affect policy and policy affects humankind. It’s really interesting as citizens, as people in general, that you actually get involved. So I think that’s why it’s exciting to see that so many people are lending their voices, but most importantly, their platform for other people’s voices, because we gotta just be amplifying the people’s word and the people’s spirit.”

And if Saturday’s turnout in D.C. (and across the country at coordinating rallies) is any indication, the people are pretty fierce — in word and in spirit.
