It turns out Angelina Jolie and Queen Elizabeth II are kindred spirits of sorts, and I am very much here for it. It’s easy to imagine Jolie and the queen could both find common ground in their humanitarian efforts and would both understand the pleasure and perils of being in the public eye. But as we are about to learn in an upcoming ITV documentary, Queen Elizabeth and Jolie not only share common ground, but the queen has also indirectly imparted serious wisdom unto Jolie and her children.

According to Entertainment Tonight, one of the first outlets to report on Jolie’s comments in the documentary The Queen’s Green Planet, which puts the spotlight The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, an initiative that began in 2015 as a network of forest conservation programs throughout the Commonwealth of Nations. Part of this documentary includes one particularly compelling moment when Jolie discusses the important lesson the queen indirectly taught her and that she, in turn, is going to pass along to her kids.
At one point in the doc, Jolie remarks, “‘This is why it’s important to plant a tree,’ that’s the biggest message I can teach my kids, and it’s something that they’ve certainly learned from Her Majesty and her message. They ask me, ‘Why is it so important to her?’ You know when you sit up at night in a tent with your kids, and they say, ‘Why does the queen of England care about planting trees in Africa?’”

Jolie continues to explain, saying, “What it comes down to is you say to the kids — you know, really, you don’t know her. You can’t understand all that it means to be a queen and all that,” she continues. “But you try to say, ‘You know, she’s just this really lovely lady who really cares about people around the world, and she really cares about the future, and she wants your grandkids and her grandkids to be able to be running around enjoying nature and other cultures and the importance of other cultures.’ She thinks that really matters and I agree with her.”

Whether or not you’re a parent, I think Jolie’s comments here are universal. During her time on the throne, Queen Elizabeth has managed to impart wisdom to her subjects, show kindness and grace in all situations and leave us with an important virtue worth emulating. The queen’s forward-thinking attitude toward conservation has clearly left an imprint on Jolie, and hopefully, it’s done the same for everyone.
