George H. W. Bush Hospitalized 5 Days After Barbara’s Death

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Bush family. They’ve rallied together to support and subsequently say goodbye to their family matriarch, Barbara Bush, and now, their family patriarch, former president George H.W. Bush, was rushed to the hospital just hours after laying Barbara to rest on Saturday.

On Monday evening, Bush family spokesperson Jim McGrath tweeted that George H.W. Bush had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday. “President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood,” McGrath stated. “He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant.”

CNN reports that according to a source close to Bush, “[He] was admitted to the hospital with an infection that led to sepsis, which can be life-threatening. He was in critical condition.” The source also disclosed to CNN that Bush’s blood pressure kept dropping at various times, which contributed to his “critical condition” status. At this time, it’s not clear if Bush’s condition has improved.

This is not the first health scare Bush has had in recent years. Local Houston news station KTRK created a timeline of his recent health issues that shows a noticeable increase in incidents beginning around 2012. After being diagnosed with a form of Parkinson’s, which left him wheelchair-bound, Bush was admitted to a Houston hospital in December 2012 for a bronchitis-related cough and other issues. In January 2015, he has surgery on his neck to repair a broken bone sustained during a fall. His most recent health concern was in 2017 when he was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia.

Among the attendees were Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and first lady Melania Trump as well as Bush and his wife’s extensive family.
