Say it ain’t so! After countless interviews during her 14-year tenure on Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo has finally done the thing all fans fear — while chatting with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, Pompeo revealed that, yes, the medical drama will eventually end. Even worse? The discussions about how that will transpire have already begun.

“Yes, we’re starting to think about how you would end a show this iconic. How do you end it? But we’re not there yet. We’re going to focus on season 15,” she told the outlet. “We just take it one season at a time.” Whew! At least the show intends to give fans more time to process this apocalyptic news.
Per Pompeo, the network has as much incentive to continue the show as the fans want to see it continue. “The show’s a tremendous money maker, let’s be honest. It makes a fortune for everybody and everyone wants to keep it going. Now, it’s sort of fun. We’re in a contest with ourselves. How long can we keep this going and still have this level of quality,” she said.
Thank the TV gods that the good people of Shondaland have very healthy competitive drives. Fingers crossed that they prolong the contest they’re having with themselves for as long as humanly possible, because we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to Meredith, Alex, Bailey, Owen, Amelia, Maggie or any of our other favorite Grey Sloan doctors just yet.

The fact that we’ll be forced to suck it up and deal with the departures of both April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) in the coming weeks should buy us at least a few more seasons with the rest of the gang, don’t you think?
At least for now fans can take comfort in the fact that Pompeo won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. When asked by ET whether or not Meredith might die and thus herald the end of the show, the actor responded, “I don’t know. I know I’m going to survive because there’s no show without me, so I never worry how I’m going to survive this. I guess I just worry if the audience will like it.”
Spoiler alert, Pompeo — none of us will like it if and/or when Meredith bids her final adieu.
Then again, we suspect that although Pompeo adores and respects her fans (she calls them the “best in the world”), she’s ultimately going to do what feels right in the moment where Meredith is concerned. In an interview with Today this week, the star essentially said as much.

“People are always going to judge, especially now with social media. You put filters on your Instagrams so you can look as good as possible, and people are still going to judge you,” she observed. “So, give them your authentic self. Who gives a shit what people think? Life is way too short.”
OK, we hear that — you do you, Pompeo. But if it’s not too much to ask, can you do you as Meredith Grey for at least, like, five more years? We’re not ready to say goodbye yet.
