Perhaps Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch should consider moonlighting as a superhero. He sure seemed to fit the bill this weekend when he saved a food delivery cyclist in London from four vicious muggers.

Per U.K. paper The Sun, the actor spotted the attack from his Uber car and didn’t hesitate to help. He jumped out of the car and ran toward the ruckus, shouting, “Leave him alone!” Witnesses say that when the attackers failed to back off, Cumberbatch pulled them off the cyclist and fought them until they finally ran away.
Cumberbatch’s Uber driver, Manuel Dias, confirmed the heroic story to The Sun.
“I was taking Benedict and his wife to a club — but I didn’t know it was him at first,” Dias recounted. “I went to turn down into Marylebone High Street and we saw four guys were pushing around a Deliveroo cyclist. My passenger jumped out, ran over and pulled the men away. They turned towards him and things looked like getting worse, so I joined in.”

It was in the middle of the melee that Dias recognized Cumberbatch. “Then it all got a bit surreal. Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street,” Dias said, pointing out the proximity of the attack to the fictional Sherlock Holmes’ home at 221 B Baker Street.
Although he clearly contributed as well, the driver insisted that “the cyclist was lucky, Benedict’s a superhero.” He also noted that Cumberbatch was very brave and “did most of it, to be honest.”
If that doesn’t fill you with hope for humanity, Cumberbatch’s interaction with the rescued rider surely will. Said Dias, “He asked the rider how he was and when he said, ‘I’m OK,’ Benedict just hugged him.'”
