This Is What’s Really Going on With Johnny Depp’s Dramatic Weight Loss

In late May, photos of Johnny Depp giving autographs and taking photos with fans outside a hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, hit the internet. The photos prompted a wave of questions and concerns, namely surrounding his obvious weight loss. Now, Us Weekly reports that the actor, who is currently on tour with his band, Hollywood Vampires, is doing just fine.

“Johnny is healthy and enjoying his time on the road with his band,” said once source. Another said that Depp “purposely lost weight because he’s on tour and is trying to stay in shape,” arguing that he looks so pale and gaunt on purpose. The latter also noted that Depp “doesn’t have any major health issues or anything.”

USA Today speculates that Depp could have lost weight for a role. The outlet also posted another photo of Depp shared on the official Hollywood Vampires Instagram account in which he looks healthier. Overall, recent photos shared on the band account do make him look like the Depp we’re more used to seeing.

Either way, 2018 has been a tough year for Depp. In May, he was sued by two former bodyguards, and in an unrelated incident, he was accused of drunkenly trying to attack a crew member on the set of his film LAbyrinth. Director Brad Furman released a statement to Us about the incident, which read, “Johnny Depp is a consummate professional, great collaborator and a supporter of other artists. He always treats the crew and people around him with the utmost respect. Movies can be stressful, and nonevents often become exaggerated. We all love stories — there isn’t one here.”

2017 wasn’t any easier — Depp finalized his divorce from Amber Heard, who alleged that he was physically and verbally abusive toward her during the course of their 15-month marriage. Heard received a $7 million settlement in the divorce, which she donated to charity. Meanwhile, Depp was embroiled in a dispute with his former business managers in February, accusing them of mismanaging his fortune — though rumors claim that the actor spends an average of $30,000 per month on wine according to USA Today.

Stress like the kind he’s experienced in the past two years can easily be a factor in dramatic weight loss, but we’ll have to take the sources at their words — even if he’s surrounded by drama, Depp is doing just fine.
