Throughout Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s courtship, the new Duchess of Sussex became synonymous with breaking royal protocol. And while it was assumed that Markle would have to fall in line after her royal nuptials, Markle’s bare-shouldered ensemble at the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Saturday has critics buzzing that the American beauty might be a subversive bride.

Markle attended the annual event alongside her husband, Prince Harry, and the rest of the royal family. This particular tradition is all part of a celebration centered on Queen Elizabeth’s birthday (which actually occurred on April 21).
At the ceremony, Markle looked stunning in a blush-hued bespoke Carolina Herrera dress topped with a coordinating Philip Treacy hat. However, some people felt that the mere act of showing off one’s shoulders was “wholly inappropriate” for such an occasion.
“I do feel her choice of an off-the-shoulder dress was pushing it for HRH Queen Elizabeth’s birthday celebration,” one critic said, per Page Six. “I have a feeling she’s going to push the limits a little too much?!” Another detractor insisted that such a dress was out of line for the Trooping “or any official engagement.”
Evidently, though, the joke’s on them — sources say that not only does Prince Harry approve of Markle’s style, but he also actually helps her choose the outfits she wears at royal engagements.

According to The Daily Mail, Prince Harry has been acting as his lovely wife’s unofficial stylist for quite some time. “Meghan is always asking Harry’s opinion. She really wants his views,” a source reportedly told The Mail. “He gives his views on what he thinks looks best, rather than helping her follow royal protocol on hemlines or anything like that. The joke is that Harry is Meghan’s surprise stylist.”
Prince Harry is even rumored to accompany Markle when she attends meetings with her favorite fashion designers, like Stella McCartney.
In other adorable news about this royal couple’s sweet bond, Harry found another way to help Markle fit in at the Trooping the Colour ceremony over the weekend. In a moment caught by the eagle-eyed harry_meghan_updates Instagram account, the good prince clues Markle in on an important piece of protocol. “Do it?” Markle appears to ask, to which her husband responds, “Yes.” At that point, Markle smiles and offers her best curtsy.

So, although Markle may have chosen a nontraditional ensemble for the Trooping the Colour parade, it’s clear the Duchess of Sussex is putting forth the effort to adapt to her new world. And the rest of the world, well, they’re all just enjoying watching such a pure love story play out on the global stage.
