There’s Major Backlash to Kevin Spacey’s New Movie Coming Out in July

A film starring Kevin Spacey that was shot more than two years ago is being released next month despite the accusations made against Spacey in the #MeToo era.

Billionaire Boys Club (doesn’t the title say it all?) was one of the projects Spacey was working on when the allegations against him first surfaced, and if it’s not telling enough, the filmmakers waited to release the trailer just a short four weeks ahead of the film’s actual debut.

Did they hope Spacey’s involvement would slip under the radar? That’s what one of Spacey’s costars hopes will happen. Richard Dupont told Page Six, “People have such short memories. And Spacey is almost unrecognizable in a beard and glasses.” We’re just going to go out on a limb here and say the implication that a sexual predator is OK when disguised is, well, not OK. At all.

Other projects that included Spacey made tough decisions once the accusations against him rolled out. House of Cards fired him. The film All the Money in the World, which, like Billionaire Boys Club, was already shot, replaced him. The director of that film, Ridley Scott, told Entertainment Weekly, “I sat and thought about it and realized, we cannot. Youcan’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film. We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of these other people.”

On-set photos of House of Cards were also released today, so social media has had Spacey on its mind, and the public reaction has been strong. Many people are decidedly against seeing him on-screen in any role.

No doubt Billionaire Boys Club producers will be monitoring the public’s reactions as time goes on. Because the only thing more expensive than shooting a movie and having it sit on the shelf is marketing and releasing a movie only to have it die in theaters.

Will they choose to pull it? Should they pull it? It’s hard to say, but whatever their decision, it could set a precedent for anyone else who has faced similar accusations.
