The View‘s Joy Behar Accidentally Stabbed Herself

Yowch! Poor Joy Behar — after being noticeably absent on Monday, the View cohost returned on Tuesday to explain she missed work because she was in the hospital. Apparently, an accidental slip of a knife caused her to seek emergency medical help.

“Saturday night, on my way to the event at the retreat, I stabbed myself in the hand with a knife,” Behar said on Tuesday’s show.

But… how? And why? What was Behar doing with a knife anyway? The same way so many of us suffer cuts and punctures, of course — in hot pursuit of food! “I was trying desperately to eat something so I was trying to open up an avocado and I stuck the knife into the pit to get it out… and I stabbed myself,” Behar elaborated.

Upon experiencing more intense pain than ever before, Behar decided her medical care was best left to professionals. And it’s a good thing too, considering she had suffered a common yet little known medical ailment with potentially serious implications.

“Apparently, there is a syndrome called avocado hand,” she said. “It’s real. And the doctor said, ‘Oh, we get this all the time.’ So anytime you’re holding the item and you try to cut it, you can get this. So what happened was, I guess there must have been infection, they put me in the hospital overnight.”

In the hospital, Behar received an “antibiotic drip” every six hours to ward off infection and, happily, healed quickly and was able to return to work.

At this point, you may be thinking, avocado hand? Seriously? But rest assured, Behar isn’t pulling one over on you — it is a thing and due to the fruit’s immense popularity, it’s on the rise. “Avocados are becoming a much more popular fruit and a dish people feel more comfortable preparing,” Dr. Sheel Sharma, clinical associate professor in the Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, told CBS News. “I’ve definitely seen an increase in the number of injuries to the hand from slicing avocados.”

Sharma also told CBS that despite their seemingly silly nature, these sorts of injuries are often quite serious and involve damage to the nerves or tendons. They can even take months to heal.

Luck must have been on Behar’s side Monday night. And although she was gifted an avocado-slicing safety system slicer and protective glove, the TV host boasts a more foolproof plan for the future. “I was thinking instead of this, I’m going to leave the dicing to Rachael Ray, and I’m going to buy ready-made guacamole,” she joked.
