Yet another of our favorite movies is getting the musical treatment! Get ready, Broadway, because Cher Horowitz is on her way to the big stage, and she’s bringing her color-coordinated ‘90s fantasy wardrobe along for the ride. That’s right: Clueless, The Musical is happening!
More: No One Will Object to This Amazing Legally Blonde News
Here’s what we know: Vogue reports that The New Group made the exciting announcement when they revealed their 2018 – 2019 production lineup. Clueless screenwriter and director Amy Heckerling will write the script for the musical, Kristin Hanggi will produce, and Kelly Devine will choreograph. Hanggi’s previous work includes the musical Rock of Ages, which received five Tony Award nominations in 2009. Devine choreographed for Rock of Ages; she was also the assistant choreographer for Jersey Boys and the choreographer for 2014’s Rocky.
We also know Clueless, The Musical will revisit iconic ‘90s hits and bring Cher, Dionne and Tai back to life in a whole new way.
Here’s what we don’t know: who will play the iconic characters onstage. Alicia Silverstone embodied Cher in a way that can never be topped, it’s true, but since Brittany Murphy died in 2009, there’s unfortunately no chance for an original cast reunion. And while we’d love to see Silverstone again in one of her best roles, we must admit: In 2018, it may be time to introduce new talent to this universe. Taylor Louderman, who currently stars as Regina George in the Broadway adaptation of Mean Girls, would be an excellent choice.
Clueless isn’t the first cult hit to get the musical treatment. Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, Waitress and School of Rock all come to mind, as do Frozen and even Spongebob Squarepants, which was nominated for 12 Tony Awards this year, and won the 2018 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. To anyone who says movies don’t make good musicals: We’re sorry you feel that way.
The New Group performs at the Pershing Square Signature Center on West 42nd Street; on their website, the company describes itself as “an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater.” They also aim to create adventurous theater that is “now” — and what’s more now right now than ‘90s nostalgia and the burgeoning realization that teenage girls are going to rule the world?
