Susan Kelechi Watson Kind of Revealed Beth’s Fate on This Is Us Season 3

Everybody, breathe! That super-cryptic flash-forward in the This Is Us Season 2 finale that showed an old Randall (Sterling K. Brown) with adult Tess (Iantha Richardson) may not be a death knell — at least not for Beth according to Susan Kelechi Watson.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watson said, “I didn’t know that I was going to die. It didn’t even cross my mind, so when I saw people tweeting about it, writing articles about it, I was like, ‘Oh, they’re kidding!’ My first thought was, ‘Oh, this is hilarious.” And then people really took it seriously.”

Apparently, even Watson’s mom assumed Beth would die in Season 3. “My mom was like, ‘I’m not going to watch this show next season,’” Watson said. “I was like, ‘Why?’ She’s like, ‘Because they’re going to kill you, and I don’t like it.’ And I was like, ‘Mom, they’re not going to kill me!’”

OK, but how does Watson know? Well, she talked to show creator Dan Fogelman about it. “They’re not going to kill Beth,” Watson said. “She’s going to survive. It feels good to know.”

We definitely agree with that feeling.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Beth will have a solid storyline in This Is Us Season 3. Some of it will revolve around her family, including (finally) exploring her immediate family. Fogelman referred to a “bottle” or “showcase” episode for Beth during a For Your Consideration Emmy panel in May, saying that the new season will feature a “deep-dive” into her past.

“It’s great because it unfolds so slowly that it gives us time to really take our time with this story and not just get there so quickly,” Watson told EW. “I like that about Beth and her story line.”

As for who old Randall and adult Tess were talking about in that Season 2 flash-forward: “I know who the person is that future-Randall is referring to, but Fogelman would cut off my big toe if I actually told you who it was,” Watson said in a different interview with EW. “But I can tell you it’s probably not what you suspect. In classic Fogelman style, it will be like, ‘Oh, wow. Didn’t see that coming.’”

Are you even surprised? This Is Us is great at keeping fans on their feet (and making them go through whole boxes of tissues each week), so the new season surely won’t be any different.
