Any worry about Meghan Markle fitting into the royal family seems to have been misguided. Since marrying Prince Harry on May 19, the former Suits star appears to have settled into her new life seamlessly — and she’s even managed to charm the queen so much that the monarch is handing over one of her own roles to the new royal.

When Markle attended the Commonwealth Youth Forum in London back in April, she made history as the first royal fiancée to do so. Her attendance also made it clear that Markle was taking a vested interest in future generations, something the Duchess of Sussex has actualized in the past through her involvement with children’s charities.
Markle must have demonstrated her commitment to such causes, because Queen Elizabeth has now entrusted her with a role that the queen herself usually handles.
Over the summer, Markle is set to host the Queen’s Young Leaders program, an initiative put into place by the queen to honor “exceptional young people” for their work in Commonwealth Nations. According to the U.K. publication Express, the role that Markle is assuming is “said to be a job that has been close to [Queen Elizabeth II’s] heart since it started five years ago.”

Markle won’t be flying totally solo, though. Harry, who became a patron of the program this year, will be helping his wife welcome the Young Leaders to Buckingham Palace.
Earlier this week, Markle and Harry enjoyed quality time with the queen at a quintessential English summer event: a day of racing at Royal Ascot. The royal couple joined Queen Elizabeth in a carriage processional that kicked off the five-day event in Berkshire.
And while Markle may have made a slight misstep at the event — unintentionally turning her back on the queen to speak with another guest — it certainly didn’t seem to affect the royal family’s afternoon together.
